Simply put, YouTube (a Google company) hires engineers that make computers do amazing things. Populated by extraordinarily creative, motivated and talented people, our Engineering team gets excited by developing new applications that really make a difference and are used by millions of people. YouTube is the leader in online video, and the premier destination to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience. YouTube allows people to easily upload and share video clips on www.youtube.com and across the Internet through websites, mobile devices, blogs and email.
The YouTube transcoding team makes sure that this massive amount of video (that comes in a wide diversity of formats) is properly decoded, and then re-encoded into all supported output formats while keeping the balance between video quality, video bitrate and processing cost at an optimum. Finding the right balance is challenging, but also very important for our business and our users! We’re looking for someone to focus on these ever mounting challenges and to scale these services cost-effectively. We already know a few pieces of the puzzle: developing better and better metrics for video quality, using the vast amount of YouTube usage data to calibrating them, continually tracking and possibly improving the state of the art in video and audio compression, etc. We will discover more puzzle pieces as we go. As a Tech Lead/Manager (TLM) at YouTube, you will provide technical leadership over a team of highly talented software engineers. You will be responsible for the overall planning, execution, and success of complex technical projects. This position is not a pure management position; TLMs are expected to contribute technically to their project. Our interview process will emphasize technical skills and management/organizational skills equally.
